When you think Arizona, you may think ‘cacti and desert,’ but Northern Arizona is vastly different than its Southern counterpart. From the depths of the Grand Canyon to the highest peak in Arizona (Humphrey’s Peak), Northern Arizona is home to several cities including Flagstaff, Williams, Winslow, and Page. Up here at 7,000 feet, we enjoy all four seasons and have unlimited access to everything outdoors from hunting, to fishing, to mountain biking and the Grand Canyon!

Flagstaff is where I chose to move to escape the rat race and smog of Southern California 12 years ago, met my husband, and raised our family in the beautiful and serene little mountain town surrounded be the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the world!

Northern Arizona has numerous activities, community events, and history to offer. It’s the perfect place for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts, foodies, artists, and more. Just a short drive away from any of these towns (Sedona, Flagstaff, Bellemont, Williams, Parks, Etc.) is the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, winter sports, camping areas, Meteor Crater, the Lava Tubes, and so much more! We experience all four seasons and have unlimited access to hiking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking and all things outdoors!

Flagstaff

Flagstaff has the feel of a small mountain town, with a very active cultural scene, miles of hiking and biking trails, a ski resort, and a tight knit community. You can find something to do outdoors here everyday of the week! The city is surrounded by National Forest – where you can go camping, take a walk, have a picnic, go fishing, or just relax and take in the fresh air! The same peaks provide skiing and snowboarding in the winter months at the local ski resort, Arizona Snowbowl, just a short 20 minute drive from the heart of downtown. There is also the Arizona Nordic Village, offering snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and more during the winter months. From hiking and mountain biking, to skiing, to river rafting the grand canyon, to camping under the stars there is never a dull day in Flagstaff!

Unlike Central and Southern Arizona, Flagstaff experiences four distinct seasons – sometimes with a lot more snow than you might expect! However, even during the winter we receive a lot of sunshine and bright bluebird days. If you get tired of the cold, it’s just a short drive down to phoenix for an entirely different climate. Flagstaff is also the first international dark sky city, so no matter where you may be in town, you can see the stars shining bright!

Flagstaff also has incredible dining options, offering everything from Thai food to sushi to Greek and beyond. Whether you’re a big spender or on a college kid budget, there is something delicious and affordable for everyone! Flagstaff also has a fairly popular nightlife. Not the clubs you’d expect from a large city – but numerous historic bars and brand new spots, ranging from college-aimed themes all the way up to upscale cocktail bars. Flagstaff truly has something for everyone in your family.

Sedona

Located at the southern end of Oak Creek Canyon, surrounded by red rocks, cottonwood trees, juniper and cacti, Sedona is an immensely beautiful city with an extremely active arts community. Similar to Flagstaff, Sedona experiences all four seasons, but runs a little warmer than it’s neighboring city to the North. There are countless fine art galleries, art markets, farmers markets, film festivals and community gatherings all year round.

Sedona is also a popular destination for those trying to get more in touch with their spiritual side – there are several known vortexes in and around Sedona, and many believe that Sedona is a vortex itself. For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are incredible hiking, walking, and biking trails around the city of Sedona and countless reasons to get outdoors any time of the year. Oak Creek runs through the canyon with fresh, mountain water that runs down from the San Francisco peaks near Flagstaff, providing a swimming, fishing and more during the warm months. Whether you choose to move to Sedona or to Flagstaff, Bellemont, Williams, or another surrounding city, you’ll definitely want to spend some time around Sedona and the majestic red rocks.

Williams, Bellemont, and Parks

Williams, sometimes referred to as “The Gateway to the Grand Canyon” is a smaller city located just west of Flagstaff, with a rich history and direct train to Grand Canyon Village. Williams has several small lakes in the area, hiking trails, and other outdoor recreational activities with four seasons of weather.

Between Williams and Flagstaff on Interstate 40, you’ll find Parks and and Bellemont. Both cities are drastically smaller, more rural suburbs of Flagstaff, allowing homes and properties to be far more spread out. You get the views, privacy, and wide-open spaces of country living, with Flagstaff amenities a short drive away.

Weather Information

Flagstaff has some of the best weather in the state of Arizona – maybe in the country! With all four seasons, you have beautiful days in the summer that are warm but never Phoenix-status hot. We also receive a summer monsoon season from about to July to early September, where short afternoon rain showers or thunderstorms cool the temperatures down. The Fall brings fantastically colored leaves and crisp air, and winter brings snow – but usually shortly followed up with sunshine. In fact, on average, Flagstaff recieves over 265 days of sunshine per year! If you get tired of the cold and snow during the Flagstaff winter, the Phoenix area is only a couple hours South, making it easy to escape the winter weather and head down to warmer temperatures.

Flagstaff is full of community events such as weekly summer farmer’s markets, numerous local arts, music, food, and craft beer festivals, indoor and outdoor concerts, trail running, mountain biking and other outdoor events, as well as star-gazing and educational nights with Lowell Observatory, The Arboretum and so much more! There is plenty to do for the whole family, for all ages.
